Beltran expected to pick between 5 teams soon

Carlos BeltranBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Carlos Beltran will likely pick his new team before Christmas, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes, noting the Cardinals are one of five teams still in contention for the switch-hitting outfielder.

Goold writes that Beltran has "varied offers from five different teams," according to a source. The Cardinals could certainly use him in right field, the spot Lance Berkman has vacated to take over for Albert Pujols at first base. The Cardinals are also without Allen Craig, who has undergone knee surgery this winter.

Yahoo's Tim Brown wrote the Blue Jays, Red Sox and "perhaps" the Rays are interested in Beltran, while Goold notes there's another National League team in the bidding. Brown reports the 34-year-old Beltran is getting offers of two years and three years.

Beltran, a three-time Gold Glove winner, is known to want to continue to play in the field, as opposed to DH, which could give the Cardinals an advantage over the American League teams.

Goold notes the Cardinals are still interested in 32-year-old outfielder Coco Crisp, who unlike Beltran can still play center field.

Beltran expected to pick between 5 teams soon

MattLee wants Cespedes. Everything he says is true except he left out one important equation or perhaps two combined. Cespedes will probably end up costing what Beltran costs, and there is no proof that he can hit MLB pitching. Practically all the Cuban defectors that have had success were pitchers. One of those pitchers could hit pretty good and that is Livian. But the position players have had much less success. If you are purchasing for 2 years, three at the max, and there is no reason not to assume that you will be able to replace Beltran when the time come, he appears to be the safer option. But this is baseball and you never know until the results are in.

Beltran expected to pick between 5 teams soon

I'm a die hard Sox fan and I'll tell you what my wise buddy used to tell me back in the day. Everytime my team tried to sign a big bat, he asked me, "Can he pitch?" That's the point, brother. Without pitching, you will not win in baseball. Its proven almost every year, mang.

The RedSox should sign him!  He's a big enough bat, switch hitter - meaning a right handed outfield bat, he can also be moved to right field.  He doesn't need to play every day - probably 140 - 145.  He can DH if Ortiz needs a day off.  He can play left if Crawford needs aday off.  Lots of flexibility.  It a no brainer for The Sox.  I know Cherington said that The Sox are on a budget (salary tax) but who in RedSox nation wants to hear that or believe that after lasts historical collapse.  The Sox either sign him or trade a left handed bat (Reddick - which would be a mistake) for a righty in right.  The Sox also need to find a starter for Lackey (SHOULDN'T BE DIFFICULT) but needs to eat up innings and they may need one more reliever.  Beltran will get 2 maybe 3 years.  His best chance to win a World Series will be in Boston.  Hope he reads this!!

Great video on Cespedes Anabolic ... this kid could very well be the next Cano .. Sox would be crazy not to pursue him over Beltran.

Sox don't need another injury prone overrated RFer ... too em 5 years to get rid of the last one .. hopefully they learned their lesson.  The guy is past his prime.

I agree on pursuing Cespedes as well ... kid is ripped  .. he has power and speed and will be a fantastic pickup and for less money.   Lock that kid up for 5 years ... then the Sox could trade Reddick in a package with other players and improve on their pitching.

So far i'm not impressed with Cherington .. guy takes too long to make decisions.   The fact that the Sox are even looking at Beltran makes me think Cherington is an idiot as well.   If we can't land Cespedes, then i'd rather keep Reddick and take the $$$ and go after PITCHING .. the Sox offense was fine last year .. it's the bullpen and rotation that needed to be rebuilt .. HELLOOOO ... this thing working?

.... and they pay these guys .. i'm gonna yack now

if the jays are going to take a run at it then they need a 3rd outfielder. Snider, thames, Davis are not the answer. If they sign Beltran then they package those guys for a starting pitcher which they also need. Putting Beltran's bat with Batista, Lind, and Lawrie is a lot better then Snider or Thames or Davis. Beltran is a good move for two years. They can even dh him which will take pressure off his knees.

Why do writers keep placing the Jays in every rumour when it clearly has no basis. Beltran is not a Blue Jays kind of signing at this point. Someone is going to pay him $11-$12 million and that will not be the Jays. This guy is not on the Jays radar at all.

I have heard of that willingness to spend on free agents but have not seen the willingness...

Agreed.  Actually the Jays already have a 5th OF - Rajai Davis.  The acquisition of Beltran makes no sense unless at least 2 of these outfielders are already being shopped.  These rumours are usually just that.  In any case, AA has shown a strong preference for young, high upside talent (even Darvish has those qualities).  Just because the ownership has shown a willingness to spend doesn't mean that the Jays are going to be in on every FA on the market.  I just wonder how many of these speculations are planted by player agents to drive up interest and price.

Beltran expected to pick between 5 teams soon

Cardinals stay away from Beltran, he has been overrated for many years. Not worth the money.
The sad fact is that Beltran is the best Of on the free agent market, there are still an few OF that St. Louis could go after. But I don't think that most of them be good fit for St. Louis, they are player that are past their prime or was not good players in the first place. The problem is that St. Louis don't have an lot to pick from, St. Louis option is trying to trade for a good OF but I don't think that will happen
