The baseball blogosphere is ablaze with the "news" that Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell is Toronto's pick to be the next manager. But if you look closer, you'll see that it all stems from a single Twitter post by Peter Gammons of MLB Network: "Three GMs today insisted John Farrell will get the Toronto job. The final list was the product of exhaustive, thoughtful due diligence"
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Not saying Gammons, one of the most connected people in baseball, is wrong. But this is a Twitter post -- no media outlet anywhere, including MLB.com, for whom Gammons works, has reported this. Blue Jays president Paul Beeston told the Globe and Mail on Thursday that "we haven't made any decision." And which three GMs "insisted"? If two of them are the GMs of the Blue Jays and Red Sox, this story probably has legs. If it's the GMs of the Padres, Rockies and Braves, it's just industry chatter.
So for now, this one sits squarely in the "rumor" category.
