Nobody thought much of it when the Rays posted a lineup Friday without Evan Longoria in it, as Joe Maddon has been saying he was looking for a chance to give his third baseman a day off. But it turns out it's going to be more than a day, and it's not just R&R.
According to the St. Petersburg Times (via Twitter), Longoria has a strained quadriceps and is likely out for the weekend series against Seattle. The injury happened Thursday as Longoria was truning a double play in New York.
To say the Rays need Longoria healthy would be putting it mildly. He's batting .294 with a team-leading 104 RBI and is the American League leader in WAR (wins above replacement) at 7.6.
