Rob Dibble's swift fall from grace as Nationals color announcer is now complete, as the team announced Wednesday that he's out for good, according to natsinsider.com.
The former major-league reliever had been off (supposedly at his own request) since making critical comments August 24 about rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg on his satellite radio show, including saying Strasburg should "suck it up." The comments were not well-received at the time, and they looked even worse when it was discovered that Strasburg had a torn ligament and needed Tommy John surgery.
Less than two week earlier, Dibble had angered fans with comments during a game broadcast about two women talking in the stands. Dibble said the women weren't paying attention to the game and were probably talking about shopping.
Dibble compounded the Strasburg mess by going on the radio on Monday trying to say his words (you know, the ones that were recorded and sent all over the world electronically) were "twisted" by "sick individuals in cyberspace." On behalf of all sick individuals in cyberspace, let me extend my least sincere apologies.
People forget that announcers on team broadcasts are employees of the team. When the announcers themselves forget that, this is what can happen.
