Joey Cora candidate for Mariners' gig
Posted on: August 31, 2010 4:54 pm
White Sox third-base coach Joey Cora is a strong candidate for the Mariners' vacant managerial job, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick is reporting .
Cora will have to fend off interim manager Daren Brown plus current favorite Ted Simmons, currently the Padres' bench coach. In addition, Bobby Valentine has expressed interest in the job.
Cora, the older brother of Alex Cora, spent 11 seasons as a player, spending four years with the White Sox. He became a starter later in his career and then retired at 34. Cora has coached for Chicago since 2003 and serves as interim manager anytime manager Ozzie Guillen is ejected or suspended. (So what, is that every game at this point?)
